YMMV, but from my experience — WiFi was a mess with my setup.
automation_fan: Completely agree — I had the exact problem and solved it by updating the driver. Took me a while to locate that parameter.

Honestly, I'd recommend Home Assistant over Smartthings for your case. Keep in mind the learning curve.
